New Orleans in the 1840’s when Sewell Taylor established his liquor business. Our business was rooted in the Cognac business in France, which in turn led to the creation and popularity of coffee houses and bars in New Orleans, the Sazerac Cocktail, and eventually to the Sazerac Company we are today. The company announced in November that part of the bottling for Buffalo Trace’s Sazerac Rye will be moving to New Orleans. While the whiskey will still be distilled at Buffalo Trace for now, the company tells us that soon the 500-gallon still that can be seen on tours will begin to produce whiskey as well. Floor Two: The Art of Our Craft

In the 19th century, industrious farmers and distillers in the heartland of the United States barreled and shipped their rye whiskeys down the great Mississippi River to the bustling, growing city of New Orleans. These spicy and assertive spirits fueled the whiskey culture of New Orleans and established the first American cocktail, The Sazerac. Part interactive museum, part brand showroom, part micro distillery, part event space, Sazerac House is the creation of the Sazerac Co., the giant distilling and liquor company owned by local businessman Bill Goldring. Then, a pest named Phylloxera crossed from North America to France, laid waste to the grape vines and dried up the supply of brandy.

Sazerac House is now slated to open to the public on Oct. 2, at the corner of Magazine and Canal streets. As the final pieces of this intricately wrought new development are moved into place, a media preview tour showed off its many gleaming new features. But it sure is a wine drinking one, between its culinary culture and social scene.

Explore interactive exhibits, enjoy complimentary samples and experience something new on every visit. In addition to exhibit space, the Sazerac House provides state of the art meeting and event space, with a capacity of up to 400 guests. Private events can include tastes of the spirits portfolios of the Sazerac Company with cocktail experts. Visitors can take self-guided tours over three floors of exhibits, with tales told by a mix of museum staff and interactive displays. The Sazerac Coffee House in the French Quarter took its own name from the popular cocktail originally made with the cognac (later replaced with rye). This bar grew into a liquor company, acquiring other brands, including Peychaud’s.

Located on the fourth floor, the space comes complete with incredible views of Canal and Magazine Streets, an authentic antique bar and plenty of room for entertaining. The open concept space makes it ideal for groups of up to 300 people. We gladly offer complimentary daily samples for guests 21 and over. We believe strongly in the importance of building a great organization which is focused on delivering a high level of excellent customer service as we bring our brands to our consumers around the world. The creation of the Sazerac has also been credited to Antoine Amédée Peychaud, a Creole apothecary who emigrated to New Orleans from the West Indies and set up shop in the French Quarter in the early 19th century. He was known to dispense a proprietary mix of aromatic bitters from an old family recipe.

Empty the ice from the first glass and coat the glasswith the Herbsaint, then discard the remaining Herbsaint. In a second Old-Fashioned glass place the sugar cube andadd the Peychaud’s Bitters to it, then crush the sugar cube.
