- Royal Caribbean vs Disney Cruise Line – The Fun Stuff

Both cruise lines offer their guests this unique experience but in distinctively different styles. Disney’s Castaway Cay stands out in the Disney vs Royal Caribbean debate for its quintessential Disney magic. This private island delivers an immersive Disney experience, complete with character greetings that delight both young and old. The island’s meticulously themed environments transport guests into a storybook paradise.
Scheduled Activities (like Trivia)
For a first-timer, booking a family cruise can be more than a bit overwhelming. Each of the aforementioned lines has a different vibe, and no two ships — even vessels from the same series — are exactly alike. For our own personal travel style, we both feel that Disney Cruise Line is still our preferred choice. It’s been our favorite way to vacation for years now, and that hasn’t changed. We can definitely see that there would be circumstances where we might choose Royal Caribbean for a particular vacation over a Disney cruise.

Their ships boast state-of-the-art features, such as surf simulators, zip lines, rock-climbing walls, and ice-skating rinks, providing an adrenaline rush for the adventurous. Additionally, Royal Caribbean offers more traditional cruise activities, including poolside relaxation, spa treatments, and fitness classes. Disney is arguably the king of entertainment, and that shows through on the cruise ships too. The live shows at night offer amazing interpretations of your favourite Disney stories, but there’s lots of entertainment throughout the daytime too, including character meet and greets which your kids will love.

Royal Caribbean’s cabins typically measure around 180 square feet, not including the balcony and there are a variety of higher-level options and suites as well. Decorations-wise, the general feel is elegant, more akin to what you might find at an upscale hotel. Tweens and teens are still gonna love the pools and water slides and onstage entertainment, as well as all the different offerings available at Castaway Cay.
Therefore, you can’t necessarily compare the price of a balcony room on Disney to one on Royal. The Junior Suites are more expensive than a regular balcony room, but they tend to still be cheaper than a Disney stateroom. For example, our Royal Caribbean 7 night cruise in a Junior Suite cost the same as a Disney 4 night cruise in a Deluxe Family Balcony room. Another important difference in the atmosphere on the pool deck is the presence of cigarette smoke. I know that the Disney ships offer designated smoking areas, but I do not know where those are because I have never smelled smoke on a Disney ship.

While other cruise lines cater to families, these two lines top the charts. Royal Caribbean is known for its humongous ships that are chock-full of family-friendly attractions, from waterslides and ice skating shows to huge kids clubs and adults-only solariums and sun decks. Disney is always top of mind for a family getaway, and the characters, quality of entertainment and family-focused service you're used to in its parks and hotels carry over onto its cruise ships. The dining options onboard the Royal Caribbean ships and the Disney ships are quite different. In addition to the main dining rooms, which we will discuss in more detail below, Disney Cruise line offers a few dining venues that are included in your cruise fare.

Beyond the array of onboard entertainment and activities, guests can expect spacious, comfortable staterooms complete with top-notch service and mesmerizing ocean views. In our epic Disney Cruise Line vs Royal Caribbean showdown, themed onboard experiences are a key highlight. Conversely, Royal Caribbean caters to those who prefer shorter-themed events, offering themed nights, weekends, and parties. This approach suits travelers in the Royal Caribbean vs Disney Cruise debate who enjoy a blend of thematic and varied entertainment, offering a taste of themed fun without committing to a full-themed voyage. In the Disney Cruise Line vs Royal Caribbean culinary showdown, both cruise lines emerge as champions in their own unique ways. Disney Cruise Line excels in themed dining experiences that are a feast for the senses and the imagination.
Disney vs. Royal Caribbean: Kids Clubs and Babysitting
We are going to call the onboard activities race a tie as Disney Cruise Line offers incredible options, especially for families with younger kids. However, if your kids are older and meet the height requirements of the Royal Caribbean activities, you would probably give them the edge. Cruise lines across the board do not allow non-potty-trained kids in their pools. Luckily Disney and Royal both provide splash pad areas for these kids to play.
On Disney ships it is much easier to let the kids enjoy the youth space anytime. At 226,963 gross register tons, the ship is about 75% bigger than its two competitors, and all that extra space allows for a crazy array of amusements. There's also an outdoor Boardwalk area that mimics the Jersey Shore with a carousel and arcade.
Royal Caribbean and Disney cruises both offer a range of dining experiences, from grab-n-go nooks to fine dining. In addition to Royal Caribbean’s 3 complimentary dining options, you can find dozens of specialty restaurants throughout the ship. Disney’s private island in The Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is an oasis reserved exclusively for Disney passengers sailing in the Caribbean. It features family-friendly beaches as well as an area for adults, a snorkeling lagoon, shopping, boat rentals, eateries, and much more.

Not only do these bands make checking kids in and out of kids’ club a breeze, they also allow the staff to locate children in just a few seconds from their computer. It is impressive to show up to check your kid out of the club and be told instantly where you can find your child within the large play area. Royal Caribbean is known for their massive cruise ships and variety of exciting activities.

All of the cruise ship entertainment that I’ve seen has always been top-notch. Disney Cruise Line offers Broadway-style musicals in the Walt Disney Theater. On longer sailings, there are often other entertainers, like magicians and ventriloquists, who perform there. There are currently five Disney Cruise ships in service, with an additional ship, the Disney Wish, which began its inaugural season last summer. These five cruise ships are in three different classes- with the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder being the two smaller ships and the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy being the larger two ships.
If you’re looking for rest and relaxation, Disney Cruise Line surprisingly boasts one of the most unique spa experiences at sea – the Rain Forest Room, by Senses Spa. While Disney truly does dinner like no one else at sea, Royal Caribbean still satisfies your palette with a diverse list of specialty options that varies from ship to ship. Did you know the average cruiser gains upwards of seven pounds on a cruise? That said, there are some big differences between the dining experience on Royal Caribbean and that of Disney Cruise Line. Still, when it comes to family-friendly attractions, neither Carnival Breeze nor Disney Fantasy comes close to offering the array of options available on Harmony of the Seas.
